What is the wet-on-wet technique on cookie decorating?
This is one of the questions that I get more often, I mentioned this cookie decorating technique quite often on my cookie decorating tutorials videos and also here on my blog. So today I am dedicating this post to answer: What is the wet-on-wet technique?
This wet on wet technique is a technique widely use in the culinary world, you might have seen it on chocolate ganache cakes, eclairs, chocolates, candies, doughnuts, etc. Some Pastry Chefs call it "Feathering effect".
The wet-on-wet technique in cookie decorating refers to a method where a layer of wet icing is applied to a cookie's surface and additional wet icing ( same consistency) in one or more contrast colors are added on top of it while it is still wet.
Royal icing consistencies master class
This technique is used to create seamless designs or blend different colors or icing making beautiful designs.
It is really one of the easiest cookie decorating techniques that aloud you to create unlimited designs.
If you want to practice this cookie decorating technique you will need:
1) Prepare enough flooding consistency icing to decorate your cookies.
2) Divide the icing in different containers and tint them in the colors you will need.
3) Right away put the icing either on tipless pastry bags, squeezing bottles or if you a bold cookie decorator cover tightly your containers and you can use a spatula or mighty toothpicks.
4) Have several toothpicks or scribble handy and blend the icing right away before the icing starts to set.
5) Unleash your creativity.
This cookie decorating technique is perfect for the beginner cookie decorator and people from all ages enjoy it creating beautiful color combinations and designs.
So if you are planning on making this technique using another liquid medium what you need to do to ?
I hope that your answer will be prepare enough (liquid medium) and tint it in several colors.
The most important thing here is that the icings you will use "must" have the same consistency to blend smoothly.
Here is a video where I make the first Valentine Cookie for this 2024 and I used the wet-on-wet technique.
