Step-by-Step Guide to Decorating Cookies with Metallic Royal Icing

Step 1: Prepare Your Cookies

Start by baking your cookies and allowing them to cool completely. Cookies need to be cool to ensure the icing adheres properly.  You can also cover your cookies with regular royal icing and then add details using metallic royal icing.

The instructions below are for covering the cookies with metallic royal icing mix.

You can read this post where I explained how to use gold luster dust to decorate cookies.  I used it to add a metallic touch to the diamond cookie.

Step 2: Mix the Metallic Royal Icing

Follow the instructions on the metallic royal icing mix package. Typically, you’ll need to add water and mix until you reach the desired consistency. For outlining or lettering the icing should be a little bit thicker, while for flooding (filling in larger areas), it should be slightly thinner.

Tip: Add a few drops of lemon juice to make the icing shiny and to improve its texture.

Step 3: Coloring Your Icing (Optional)

If you want to enhance the metallic color or mix new shades, add a few drops of food coloring to your icing. Mix well until you achieve a consistent color.

Step 4: Fill Your Piping Bags

Carefully fill your piping bags with the metallic icing. Use different piping tips for various effects, such as fine lines for detailing and larger tips for flooding areas.

Step 5: Outline and Flood Your Cookies

Start by outlining the edges of your cookies with the thicker icing. Allow it to set for a few minutes before filling in the area (flooding) with the thinner icing. Use a toothpick or a small spatula to spread the icing evenly and to pop any air bubbles.

Step 6: Add Edible Glitter

Before the icing dries completely, sprinkle edible glitter on top for a sparkling effect. You can use different colors of glitter to match the theme of your cookies.

Tip: Use a small brush to gently press the glitter into the icing, ensuring it adheres well.  You can also add edible glitter to cookies cover with regular royal icing for a festive touch.

Step 7: Let the Cookies Dry

Allow your decorated cookies to dry completely. This can take several hours, depending on the humidity and thickness of the icing. For best results, leave them to dry overnight or even more than that.  Be sure to check if the metallic icing is completely dry before packaging your cookies.  This metallic royal icing takes longer to dry, comparing with regular royal icing.
